The following speech was delivered by Sheriff Jesse Bane on September 9, 2010 at the groundbreaking for the new Southern Precinct located at the intersection of Route 152 (Mountain Road) and Route 40 (Pulaski Highway).

This is a great day for our Community; and a great day for Harford County Law Enforcement as well.

This precinct represents the commitment of Harford County Government to adequately address the public safety needs of our constituents in southern Harford County.

And it belongs not only to Harford County Government but to the Community as well.

For Law Enforcement, and the Harford County Sheriff’s Office in particular, today is long overdue.

Presently, we police southern Harford County in a converted 7-11 building that was built many years ago.  70 deputies are assigned here and they stand, shoulder to shoulder at roll calls.  They wait their turn to use desk space, equipment and technology to complete their administrative assignments.  The offices are the size of closets and the overcrowding hinders our operations and our mission.

Contrast this with this new facility.  We will finally have adequate space for our personnel to work.  State of the art technology will enable us to stay ahead of the crime.  And we will have room for future growth; something that is very important given the advent of BRAC to Harford County.

We want the Community to know that, once our patrol operations vacate Gateway Drive, we will continue to maintain a presence there.  The facility will provide meeting rooms for the Sheriff’s Office and the Community and it will continue to house our monitoring operations for our camera systems both present and planned.

In closing, on behalf of the men and women of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office, I want to thank the Community whose tax dollars will build this facility.  And I want to thank County Government, the County Executive and the County Council for your vision and your support in making this dream a reality.

Again, I say, this is a great day for our Community and a great day for Harford County Law Enforcement.

Authority: Bane for Sheriff; Ina Taylor, Treasurer
