SHERIFF JESSE BANE FILES FOR OFFICE

After much speculation about his future political plans, Sheriff L. Jesse Bane officially declared his candidacy today for the Office of Sheriff of Harford County.  At 10:00 AM, June 8, 2010, Sheriff Bane met with an election official at the Harford County Election Board to complete the necessary forms and paid his filing fee, declaring his candidacy for the office he held for the past four years.

Sheriff Bane began his career with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office on October 2, 1972.  He worked his way through the ranks, retiring as a Major to run for Sheriff in 2006.

“During my entire career with the Sheriff’s Office,” said Bane, “I worked very hard to make my community the safest it could possibly be.  I was able to further that goal when elected to office in November, 2006, and I would say my record as Sheriff speaks for itself.”

Voted into office on his promise to address gangs and violence in the County, Sheriff Bane immediately invested in technology and instituted County Stat (also known as Comp Stat in other jurisdictions),  using crime analysis to address the County’s crime problems.  A review of the Uniform Crime Reports for Harford County shows a reduction in crime this past year by 11.2%, one of the more significant decreases in crime ever registered in the County during Sheriff Bane’s tenure with the Sheriff’s Office.  In citing changes to Harford County’s crime problems, he also noted a 29% reduction on known gang members in Harford County since the agency began tracking the gang population in 2005.

“There is still much work to be done,” said Sheriff Bane, “and that is why I am seeking the office for another four years.  The Sheriff’s Office is gifted with many talented men and women who have worked hard during my term to make a difference in their County.  It is my intent to give them the tools and the leadership they need to continue the momentum that has made Harford County one of the safest counties in the State.”
